Founded in 1926, United Airlines is an American airline, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Its most important hub is located at Houston Airport. It now serves more than 1,000 stopovers in 170 countries.

To ensure quality flights, the company has implemented a baggage policy adapted to international air transport laws. A security assurance that it guarantees to its passengers.

 

Cabin baggage:

The maximum dimensions allowed for hand luggage with United Airlines are 22 x 35 x 56 cm, including handles and wheels.

An additional personal item is also allowed in the cabin such as: Jacket or umbrella, Book or periodical, Food or merchandise purchased at the airport, Assistive devices (foldable wheelchair, cane, pair of crutches, medical devices necessary to administer prescription drugs, portable oxygen concentrator, etc.), FAA-approved child restraint or child safety seat, Diaper bag, Camera, Breast pump…

The maximum dimensions for a small personal item, such as a shoulder bag, handbag, laptop sleeve or other small item, are 22 x 25 x 43 cm.

Note:
In Basic Economy class, the personal item will be the only baggage allowed in the cabin.

 

Checked baggage:

The dimensions of a standard checked bag with United Airlines, must not exceed 158 cm, including handles and wheels.

The maximum weight of checked baggage depends on the class of service and the status of the passenger at the time of check-in:

  • United economy: one piece of luggage allowed up to 23 kg.
  • United Business / First / United Polaris Business Class: one piece of luggage allowed up to 32 Kg.
  • MileagePlus status: one piece of baggage up to 32 kg allowed.

 

Transport of sports equipment:

Archery Equipment: United accepts one item of archery equipment per passenger as checked baggage. All items must be properly stored in a suitable container. An item of archery equipment may contain: A bow case containing bows, A quiver with arrows, A maintenance kit strong enough to protect the items from possible damage.

Baseball Equipment: United accepts one bag of baseball equipment per passenger as checked baggage. Baseball bats are not accepted as carry-on baggage.

Bicycle: United Airlines accepts one non-motorized single-saddle bicycle or up to two non-motorized bicycles stowed in a crate as checked baggage. If the bike(s) are placed in a container over 23kg and/or 158cm combined (L+W+H), the items will be subject to standard oversize and overweight charges. Check-in fees for the first bag, second bag and additional bags may apply. If the bicycle(s) are packed in a crate weighing less than 23 kg whose linear dimensions (L + W + H) do not exceed 158 cm, no bicycle registration fee will be applied. However, the first or second checked bag fee may apply. The restrictions on transporting bicycles are as follows:
– The handlebars must be turned to the side and the pedals removed or
– All loose parts should be tucked away in plastic foam or similar protective material, or
– Bicycles must be transported in a waterproof box.

Bodyboard / Skimboard / Speedboard: United accepts boogieboards / skimboards / speedboards or a bag of boards containing up to two boards per passenger as checked baggage.

Bowling Equipment: United accepts one set of bowling equipment per passenger as checked baggage. A bowling equipment kit consists of: One to three bowling balls. United allow up to three bowling balls in a single bag. A bowling bag. A pair of bowling shoes.

Camping Equipment: United accepts camping items as checked baggage. Camping items include, but are not limited to, the following items: Tents, Backpacks of all types, Sleeping bags.

Fencing and Kendo Equipment: United accepts fencing and kendo equipment as checked baggage. Fencing and kendo equipment must be properly stored in a suitable container. A kendo bag containing kendo equipment and a bamboo weapon is allowed. Any fencing or kendo equipment checked in over the free baggage allowance is considered one piece based on the excess baggage rate, even if it is made up of multiple pieces. Fencing and kendo bags weighing more than 23 kg that contain other items in addition to or in place of the appropriate fencing or kendo equipment will be subject to applicable excess weight charges. Fencing or kendo bags measuring more than 158 linear cm (L + W + H) in total that contain other items in addition to or instead of the appropriate fencing or kendo equipment will be subject to oversize fee.

Fishing Gear: United accepts one piece of fishing gear per passenger as checked baggage. A piece of fishing equipment can be: Two rods, A reel, A landing net, A pair of fishing boots, A tackle box. All items must be properly stored in a suitable container not exceeding 115 linear inches (L+W+H) and weighing no more than 23 kg.

Golf Equipment: United accepts one piece of golf equipment per passenger as checked baggage. An item of golf equipment may be: Golf bag containing 1 set of golf clubs, Golf balls, A pair of golf shoes. All items must be properly stored in a suitable container. The golf bag must be covered or stored in a rigid and solid transport container.

Gym Equipment: United accepts one item of gym equipment per passenger as checked baggage. Gymnastic equipment must be properly stored in a suitable container. Gym bags weighing more than 23 kg that contain other items in addition to or instead of proper gym equipment will be subject to applicable excess weight charges.

Hang Gliding Equipment: Hang gliding equipment components can usually be individually packed in separate bags. United will accept hang gliding equipment as checked baggage up to the customer’s checked baggage allowance. These items will be subject to standard oversize and overweight charges. Check-in fees for the first bag, second bag and additional bags may apply. The combined weight for all hang gliding equipment components cannot exceed 45.4 kg

Hockey/Lacrosse Equipment: United will accept one hockey or lacrosse bag and up to two hockey sticks or lacrosse sticks tied together per passenger as one piece of checked baggage.

Javelins: United accepts javelins as checked baggage. Javelins must be properly stored in a rigid container.

Kiteboards: United Airlines accepts one kiteboard or bag containing kiteboarding equipment as checked baggage. If the kiteboard or kiteboard container weighs more than 23 kg or measures more than 158 cm cumulative (L + W + H), the item will be subject to an additional excess size and weight charge. . If the kiteboard container or the kiteboard itself weighs less than 23 kg or measures less than 158 linear in total (L + W + H), standard service charges apply. The board must be properly protected or must be packed in an appropriate container to avoid scratches. United Airlines cannot be held responsible for any damage to boards or kitesurfing equipment.

Parachutes: United accepts sport parachutes and parasails as checked baggage. A parachute or parasailer carried on board must meet the carry-on baggage size restrictions in order to fit under the passenger seat.

Pole Vaulting Equipment: United accepts a pole vault as special baggage upon payment of standard overweight and overweight fees.

Billiard Cues: United accepts one case of billiard cues per passenger as checked baggage.
Scuba Gear: United will accept one dive bag containing scuba gear as part of the customer’s standard checked baggage allowance. Dive bags containing equipment, which weigh more than 50 lbs and/or have linear dimensions greater than 62 linear inches, will be accepted as sporting equipment subject to a special item charge.

Skating Equipment: Ice Skates: United accepts ice skates as checked baggage on all flights and as carry-on baggage on flights within the United States only. If the ice skates are checked in an individual bag, this bag will count towards the baggage allowance.

Rollerskates/rollerblades/skateboards: United accepts only non-motorized roller skates, roller blades and skateboards as checked baggage or carry-on baggage.

Ski and Snowboard Equipment: United accepts one item of ski or snowboard equipment per customer as checked baggage. The equipment must be properly stored in a suitable container. An item of ski equipment may be: Water skis, Up to two snowboards per bag and one ski boot bag. Up to two pairs of alpine skis, plus associated equipment in a bag and a ski boot bag. If the combined weight of the ski bag and boot bag exceeds 23 kg, applicable excess weight charges apply. A shoe bag not accompanied by a ski bag is considered as baggage; standard baggage fees apply.

Surfboards, Wakeboards and Paddleboards: United accepts surfboards, wakeboards and paddleboards as special baggage as long as they are packed in suitable bags and weigh no more than 45.3 kg .

Tennis Equipment: United will accept one item of tennis equipment as checked baggage or carry-on baggage. A tennis equipment item consists of a tennis bag containing tennis rackets and tennis balls.
Kayak Surfing: United Airlines accepts one wave ski or a bag containing wave ski equipment as checked baggage.

Windsurfing Equipment: United Airlines will accept, per customer, one item of windsurfing equipment weighing no more than 99.9 lbs as checked baggage. An item of windsurfing equipment can be: A board whose dimensions do not exceed 115 linear inches, A boom, A mast, A sail, Necessary equipment. Windsurfing equipment should be padded and stored in a suitable container to protect it from scratches or knocks or any other possible damage during handling.

 

Items prohibited on board the company’s aircraft:

 

  • Avalanche kits
  • Camping Equipment
  • Defense Aerosol
  • Explosives, fireworks and table bombs
  • Gas-powered tools and equipment
  • Some household items are flammable or corrosive. Items such as bleach, drain cleaners, epoxy, fuel, gel fuel, glue, insecticides, some types of paint, gasoline lighters, spray starch, matches and certain aerosol items are not permitted in checked baggage or carry-on baggage. Aerosol cans that contain personal care products are permitted if they do not exceed 480ml per bottle in checked baggage or 90ml per bottle in hand luggage.
  • Self-propelled recreational vehicles, hoverboards and motorized suitcases
  • Lighters, matches and electronic cigarettes.
  • Diving bottles.
  • The shock absorbers.
  • Defense electric weapons.
  • Tasers
